What can we still say and show about Audrey?
A lot, considering that many years after her death (in 1993), the chorus girl, the actress, the wife, the mother, the fashion icon and the humanitarian is still a source of inspiration for millions. There is something very special about Audrey and it’s more than just star quality. The world is forever in love with her — and so am I.
Part of this universal fascination, a big part, comes from her photos. Very few people in the world were so photographed as she was and, wherever we go, Audrey is recognizable. There are thousands of different images from her earlier years to her later life but, somehow, collectors always find a way to get their hands on a rare portrait that we, fans, did not know about (as a “collector” myself I’m already happy when I can add something relatively unknown about her on my Pinterest gallery).
This is why this exhibition at National Portrait Gallery, in London until October 18, is such a bliss. With the precious support of her two sons, foundation and group, they have managed to gather more than seventy classic and rare prints taken from well known photographers such as Richard Avedon, Cecil Beaton, Terry O’Neill, Norman Parkinson or Irving Penn (the extra bonus are the vintage magazine covers and film stills).
And she steals our heart again.
O que ainda se pode dizer (e mostrar) de novo sobre alguém como Audrey Hepburn?
Já me fiz essa pergunta e sempre, de alguma forma, sou surpreendido. Como agora com esta exposição em cartaz na National Portrait Gallery, em Londres, até 18 de outubro. Audrey morreu em 1993, mas tornou-se transversal. Ela permanece uma fonte de inspiração e as suas fotos, mais até do que os filmes (que não foram tantos assim, pois retirou-se cedo), só fazem aumentar o fascínio. Poucos rostos no mundo são mais reconhecidos — mesmo por aqueles que não são seus contemporâneos.
Audrey é um ícone que atravessa o tempo. Indiferente a modas. É isso que a torna tão especial — inclusive para mim.
Para a mostra “Portraits of an Icon“, a National, com a ajuda dos filhos e de vários grupos e fundações, conseguiu um feito inédito: reunir mais de setenta retratos (fora as capas de revistas e fotografias de bastidores) tirados por alguns dos maiores fotógrafos do século XX (como Richard Avedon, Cecil Beaton, Terry O’Neill, Norman Parkinson ou Irving Penn). Há imagens clássicas, que todos reconhecemos à primeira, e há outras mais raras, as tais que fazem as delícias de colecionadores no mundo inteiro (como “colecionador” já me dou por contente quando consigo encontrar na Net algo que merece juntar-se à galeria que lhe dediquei no Pinterest).
Corista, atriz, mulher, mãe, modelo de elegância, filantropa… Está tudo nas fotos. E, uma vez mais, perdemo-nos de amores.
